Pakistan has issued an urgent demand for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, warning that the besieged territory is facing a catastrophic humanitarian and food emergency that could lead to famine, Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain declared at a United Nations council session on Tuesday.

Representing Pakistan at the 179th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Council, Hussain delivered a strong condemnation of Israel’s repeated ceasefire violations. He expressed profound alarm over the ‘catastrophic’ conditions confronting civilians, noting that the collapse of essential services and widespread displacement have created a perilous situation.

In his address, the minister highlighted the acute deprivation that has plunged the populace to the brink of starvation. He lauded the FAO for maintaining its operations in Gaza “under extremely dangerous and life-threatening circumstances,” describing the organization’s presence as a testament to its humanitarian commitment.

Hussain pressed the international community to bolster its backing for the FAO and to guarantee the unhindered delivery of aid to the enclave. He emphasized that the world must take decisive action to prevent further civilian casualties and must not remain indifferent to the escalating human suffering.

The statement noted that Pakistan, a founding member of the FAO, is currently serving on its Council for the 2024-2026 term. The minister welcomed the news that Pakistan has been elected unopposed to continue its tenure for the 2027-2029 term, calling it an expression of confidence in the nation’s “principled engagement.”

He underscored that the upcoming period is particularly significant as the FAO prepares for major institutional reforms. He also pointed to Pakistan’s influential role on the FAO Finance Committee, which allows the country to shape budgetary oversight and policies aimed at improving institutional accountability and supporting vulnerable food systems.

On the sidelines of the session, the minister is scheduled to meet with the FAO Director-General and Italy’s Minister for Agriculture to further cooperation on food security and capacity-building. Pakistan reaffirmed its dedication to supporting the FAO’s Strategic Framework and contributing to global efforts to eradicate hunger and build sustainable agricultural resilience.
