Islamabad: Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council to establish structured follow-up on the implementation of its resolutions. Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized this point during an open debate focused on strengthening mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes held in New York.

According to Radio Pakistan, Ambassador Ahmad proposed that the Council should regularly receive assessments, identify any obstacles, and encourage parties to select appropriate peaceful means if a dispute remains unresolved or a relevant resolution is unimplemented. He highlighted the importance of enhancing direct communication, restraint, and practical confidence-building measures, such as hotlines and de-confliction arrangements.

He further advocated for more systematic cooperation between the United Nations and regional as well as sub-regional organizations. The Ambassador noted that the United Nations provides Charter-based legitimacy, impartial convening authority, and technical capacity, which can be pivotal in resolving disputes.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar also stated that Pakistan's foreign policy principles and diplomatic practices reflect a firm belief in the peaceful settlement of disputes. He reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with numerous Security Council resolutions.

Additionally, the Ambassador highlighted Pakistan's mediating role between Iran and the United States, emphasizing the success of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which facilitated subsequent negotiations. He described the Islamabad MoU as a testament to the power of determined diplomacy, which opened channels for dialogue, brought parties together, and saved lives while redirecting efforts towards peaceful engagement.
