Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr Musadik Malik, met with representatives of SPAR6C (Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation), a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) initiative, to enhance Pakistan’s engagement in international carbon markets.
SPAR6C, a five-year program (2022-2027), assists Pakistan, Colombia, Thailand, and Zambia in preparing for effective participation in these markets under the Paris Agreement’s Article 6. The meeting centered on bolstering Pakistan”s preparedness for Article 6 cooperation, particularly through SPAR6C’s student sponsorship program. Discussions covered support for Pakistani students trained or conducting research on Article 6 and connecting their expertise with national carbon market projects.
The dialogue also explored current and future carbon trading prospects in Pakistan, including potential projects under review. Minister Malik reiterated Pakistan”s dedication to developing a strong, transparent, and inclusive carbon market. He stressed the significance of strengthened partnerships with international development organizations like SPAR6C and the domestic private sector to ensure national climate preparedness and sustained economic expansion.
