Pakistan, Australia to collaborate on water security, agriculture


Pakistan and Australia have agreed to closely collaborate on water security and agriculture.

It was agreed in a meeting between Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Romina Khurshid Alam and Australian High Commissioner Neil Hawkins in Islamabad today.

The understanding would also provide technical assistance to Pakistan for water security management.

Range of bilateral issues of mutual interest including COP29, water security, forest fires, climate resilience community, GLOFIII and Climate Change Authority came under discussion during the meeting,

Both sides also agreed on consistent engagements to further deepen their ties in climate initiatives.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator underscored that water security is Pakistan’s most critical challenge and durable management of water is indispensable for sustainable development.

She informed the British High Commissioner that she is working on GLOFIII project in Pakistan which will at one
hand reduce the risks of floods in northern areas, and on the other, it will provide huge reservoirs of water.

British High Commissioner Neil Hawkins, while reiterating his resolve of close collaboration with Pakistan, said that the Australian Government’s main focus in Pakistan is to work on climate change and gender.
