NDMA issues ‘GLOF’ advisory for GB, KP

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday issued an advisory for Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) pertaining to Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF).

In a statement, the NDMA said that in light of higher temperatures and prevailing weather conditions, including rain/wind- thunderstorms up to 12 August 2024, there is increased risk of GLOF events, flash floods, landslides/ mudslides, in vulnerable areas of GB and KP, especially in Districts Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Astore, Gilgit, Skardu, Ghanche, Shigar, and adjoining areas.

The NDMA said the public is advised to avoid unnecessary movement in such areas, especially the discharge nullahs/streams and rivers. It said the population at risk is advised to exercise extra caution and follow instructions from local authorities for safe evacuation in case of emergency.

General masses have been advised to stay informed by keeping track of weather updates and alerts. The NDMA said that it has launched the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, available on Google Play Store and iOS App Store, to provide timely alerts, advisories, and guidelines to the public.

It issued instructions to all relevant departments to take necessary precautions to mitigate the possible effects of flooding and extreme weather.
