NAB Chairman calls for collective efforts to combat corruption

ISLAMABAD:,,, Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed has reiterated that the anti-graft body will ensure that every act of corruption is met with consequences.

He was speaking at an event held to commemorate the “International Anti-Corruption Day” at NAB Headquarters, Islamabad with the theme of “Documented Economy Curbs Corruption”.

The NAB Chairman said a sole institution cannot eradicate corruption and this menace can only be defeated through collective efforts of all stakeholders.

He reiterated that NAB will ensure that every act of corruption is met with consequences. He said documentation of economy will most certainly help the country and will substantively curb corruption.

He said that NAB remains committed to the obligations of United Nations’ Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC). Prominent economist and Director General of NUST’s (National University of Science and Technology) Institute of Policy Studies (NIPS) Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan and Country Representative of United Nations’ Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Pakistan Mr Jermey Milsom, attended the event as guest speakers.

Dr Ashfaque Hassan Khan, in his key-note speech, stated that it is the responsibility of every citizen to get registered in the taxation system so that they can get welfare benefits from the State.

He said people within informal/unregistered economy remain poor as they have no access to banking incentives including loans. He emphasized that incentivizing the tax system will yield more benefits than punitive measures.

Earlier, Director General, Awareness and Prevention (A and P) Division, NAB Headquarters Nauman Aslam briefed about the importance of commemorating the Anti-Corruption Day and the role of A and P Division in creating awareness about adverse impacts of corruption.

Chairman NAB also awarded Merit and Appreciation Certificates among NAB officers for their outstanding performance in their respective domain.
