Chairman WAPDA Naveed Asghar Chaudhry inspected the Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project’s advancement during a site visit.
The project, located on the Swat River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Mohmand Tribal District, is progressing steadily towards its 2027 power generation target. Accompanied by Member Water Syed Ali Akhtar Shah, Chaudhry assessed multiple aspects of the project, including the spillway, powerhouse, main dam, diversion system, and power intake. Construction on the main dam commenced in May 2025, following the completion of essential prerequisites such as diversion tunnels, coffer dams, dam foundation, and abutment excavation.
The General Manager/Project Director of Mohmand Dam, accompanied by representatives from the consulting and contracting firms, provided Chaudhry with a detailed briefing on the progress of each component. Work is currently underway at 14 different locations concurrently. Construction of the powerhouse has also begun, with electro-mechanical equipment production well advanced and spillway construction ahead of schedule. The project is anticipated to start producing electricity in 2027.
Emphasizing the dam”s significance for irrigation, flood control, and clean energy generation, Chaudhry urged all parties involved to maintain their efforts to ensure timely completion. The 213-meter-high structure stands as the world”s fifth tallest concrete-faced rock-fill dam (CFRD). It boasts a substantial water storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet, capable of irrigating over 18,000 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda. Furthermore, it will supplement water supplies to 160,000 acres of existing farmland served by the Lower Swat and Doaba Canals.
With an installed capacity of 800 megawatts, the project will contribute 2.86 billion units of eco-friendly electricity to the national grid annually. In addition to its power generation and irrigation benefits, the dam will offer flood protection for Peshawar, Charsadda, and Nowshera, while also providing Peshawar with 300 million gallons of drinking water per day.
