Maritime minister unveils strategy to improve ports, upgrade infrastructure

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has unveiled a groundbreaking maritime strategy that prioritizes climateresilient infrastructure.

The initiative seeks to modernize ports, minimize environmental impacts, and stimulate economic expansion, marking a substantial shift in the nation’s approach to maritime development.

During a series of pivotal meetings, the minister scrutinized progress across key maritime bodies, including the Port Qasim Authority (PQA), Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority (KoFHA), and the Marine Fisheries Department (MFD). The focus was firmly on environmental sustainability, underscoring the importance of ecofriendly practices in maritime operations.

A notable part of the strategy includes the PQA’s ambitious 10year development plan, which aims to enhance cargo handling capabilities and upgrade infrastructure. This plan aspires to transform the port into a leading regional logistics hub.

In another major move, Chaudhry assessed KPT’s reform agenda, which focuses on governance, workforce development, operational upgrades, financial health, stakeholder relations, and improved service provision. The KPT management reported notable advancements, including digitalization initiatives, clearing approximately 44,000 containers, enhancing export procedures, and successfully conducting oil spill response drills.

Attention was also directed towards the Marine Fisheries Department (MDF), which showcased initiatives such as a fisheries dialogue and research center, and a revamped training facility expected to host 300 sessions over three years. The department has also reactivated four laboratories, achieved a nontax revenue target of Rs250 million, and secured $450 million in seafood exports. The Director General of MDF, Dr Mansoor Ali Wasan, informed the Minister about the training opportunities for stakeholders like fishermen and exporters at the Fisheries Research Center.

Moreover, the minister encouraged KoFHA to expedite the Pak Aqua publicprivate partnership to bolster trade by capitalizing on private investment for facility upgrades and increased efficiency.

This comprehensive strategy not only targets economic growth but also aligns with global climate objectives, positioning the maritime sector as a key player in the international trade arena, according to the minister.
