KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constructed 192-bed Children’s Ward at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital in the provincial metropolis.

Speaking at the ward’s inaugural ceremony, the Karachi mayor said that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) would build the Karachi Institute of Child and Health in the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, adding a management board would be formed in connection with the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital affairs, taking on board prominent personalities of the city.

Mr Wahab said: “The district central Karachi will soon get a Metropolitan University. The city mayor hailed Professor Dr Sultan Mustafa for taking the responsibility to fix the pediatric department of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, adding we should appreciate the services of our heroes, hence, this ward should be named VJ Ward which is a short form of the name of Dr Sultan’s mother.

The renovation of Gynecology Ward and Trauma Center would also be completed soon, he said and added that the annual expenditure of Karachi Medical and Dental College is Rs1.1 billion. We also want to run Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases like the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Mr Wahad asserted.

A large number of people come here for first aid, so we are improving the emergency ward and gynecological ward of the trauma center attached to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital to provide them with high quality facilities. “The Abbasi Shaheed Hospital with 1,000 beds is the third largest hospital in Karachi and efforts are being made to upgrade this hospital, which will make Karachi, especially the district central citizens, to have access to better medical facilities,” the Karachi mayor concluded.
