The Karachi administration has taken decisive steps to combat overcharging by intercity bus operators, working in tandem with the Provincial Transport Authority.
In a recent crackdown, Deputy Commissioners were instructed by Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi to impose fines and ensure excess fare refunds to passengers.
Deputy Commissioner East, Abrar Jaffar, reported on Friday that actions were executed at three major locations: Karachi Toll, Karachi Bus Terminal Super Highway, and Punjab Bus Stand.
In these efforts, fares on 213 buses at Karachi Toll were scrutinized, resulting in Rs. 6 lakh 13,000 being refunded to passengers. Additionally, 87 buses faced challans for overcharging, with fines totaling Rs. 2 lakh 93,000.
At Karachi Bus Terminal on the Super Highway, 151 buses were checked, and Rs. 2 lakh 75,000 was returned to passengers. Meanwhile, at the Punjab Terminal, checks on 171 buses led to refunds amounting to Rs. 3,78,500.
Commissioner Naqvi has urged citizens to reject extra charges from bus operators and report any overcharging incidents. Help desks have been established at bus terminals and stands, supervised by assistant commissioners, with staff from the Provincial Transport Authority and Deputy Commissioner’s office appointed to aid the public.
