Justice Bakir to be sworn in as Sindh caretaker CM tomorrow

KARACHI:Sindh caretaker Chief Minister-designate Justice Maqbool Bakir will take the oath to his office in a swearing-in ceremony to be held on August 16 (tomorrow). Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori approved the appointment of Justice (R) Maqbool Bakir as caretaker Chief Minister and also issued a notification. The oath-taking ceremony of the caretaker chief minister of Sindh will be held on August 16.

The governor gave his approval on the recommendation of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who sent the name to the governor on Monday night. Outgoing Chief Minister Shah and Opposition Leader in Sindh Assembly Rana Ansar reached a consensus on the name of Justice Baqir as a caretaker chief minister after hectic three-day consultations which ended yesterday.

According to a statement issued by Sindh CM Office on Monday, “After three-day consultations between Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Leader of Opposition in the dissolved provincial assembly Rana Ansar, the two have agreed on the appointment of retired justice Maqbool Baqar as caretaker chief minister.”

The MQM-P also confirmed yesterday that consensus was reached on the name of Mr Bakir, saying that “the party has taken into confidence its partner before reaching the decision,” adding that the MQM considered the Grand Democratic Alliance’s (GDA) input.

Justice Bakir’s name as the caretaker chief minister was suggested by Murad Ali Shah, and Opposition Leader Rana Ansar approved the name on the advice of the GDA. Justice Maqbool Bakir was born in 1957. He hails from Karachi. He did his LLB from University of Karachi and started practicing law in 1981. He was appointed the Sindh High Court judge in 2002 and then Chief Justice of Sindh High Court in 2013.

Justice (R) Bakir was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2015 and retired as a judge of the Supreme Court on April 4, 2022. He was also got seriously injured in a terrorist attack in June 2013. Nine people including his security personnel were martyred in the attack. PPP, MQM propose names for provincial cabinet

As consultations for forming the caretaker Sindh cabinet go on, MQM has proposed names of Shoaib Siddiqui, Younus Dhaga and Fazlullah Qureshi while the PPP has forwarded names of Mumtaz Shah, Siddique Memon, Mushtaq Mehar, Ahmad Shah, Nisar Morayi and Mobeen Jamani. According to sources, the names for Sindh Cabinet will be finalized by tomorrow and initially 10 ministers will take oath.
