Irresponsible Statement by PTI Minister Caused Billions in Losses to PIA: Khawaja Asif

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif today accused former Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan of causing billions of rupees in damages to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) through an irresponsible declaration made during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) administration.

During a press briefing in Islamabad on Wednesday, Asif contended that Khan’s accusations against his own ministry led to international flight restrictions on the national airline, harming national esteem and constituting a criminal act against the country. He emphasized that Khan has never clarified his contentious assertion and attributed full responsibility for the subsequent prohibition to PTI.

Asif highlighted the reliance of overseas Pakistanis, particularly those in the UK, on PIA for transportation, stating the ban”s lifting will provide them with much-needed ease. He proclaimed PIA”s renewed authorization to operate flights to the United Kingdom as a substantial triumph for Pakistan”s aviation industry, anticipating it will rehabilitate the airline”s global standing and boost its value before privatization.

The minister revealed the government”s focus on the next stage of PIA”s privatization, noting the restoration of international routes will aid this endeavor. He expressed gratitude to international aviation authorities for their guidance and acknowledged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif”s personal involvement.

Asif disclosed efforts to resume PIA flights to New York and stressed the government”s duty to ascertain the ban”s causes and take appropriate measures. He commended the contributions of various individuals and organizations in reviving the airline and declared the day a significant milestone for Pakistan.

“We are elevating a national entity to new levels, and I commend the entire nation on this accomplishment,” he affirmed. He added that Pakistan will seek operating permits to restart international flights and completely reinstate its position in the global aviation sector.
