India’s aspirations for regional dominance will fail: Gillani

Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani today labeled August 5, 2019, a dark day, criticizing India’s revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and the ensuing human rights abuses in the region. In a statement marking the sixth anniversary of the Indian government”s decision, Gillani asserted the action removed fundamental rights from Kashmiris and transformed Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) into an “open-air prison.”

He described the lockdown imposed after the decision as one of the longest in recorded history, affecting people of all ages. He stated that this “state-sponsored tyranny” was almost unprecedented in modern times. The Chairman highlighted the international community’s anxieties over India”s policies, with various organizations and human rights groups questioning their legitimacy. He cautioned that these actions jeopardize regional stability and hinder growth and prosperity in South Asia.

Gillani reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir conflict based on UN resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri populace. He emphasized dialogue and diplomacy as the only path to resolving disagreements. He asserted that India’s aspirations for regional dominance would ultimately fail and that after six years of suppression, the Kashmiri people continue to seek their right to self-determination.

He appealed to the international community to actively advocate for justice and compel India to comply with UN resolutions and respect the will of the Kashmiris. Gillani concluded by expressing Pakistan”s unwavering support for the Kashmiri people and their cause.
