Govt decides to withdraw curative review petition against Justice Qazi Faez Isa

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to withdraw the curative review petition against senior most Judge of the Supreme Court Justice Qazi Faez Isa in the presidential reference case against him.

In a tweet on Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the curative review filed by PTI government in 2021 after the quashment of presidential reference against the Judge, was based on ill-will and meant to harass and intimidate the Judge.

A separate statement issued by the Prime Minister Office shared that a cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister had already given assent to taking back the reference. It added that Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has been directed by the Prime Minister to take back the curative plea. In July 2022, the federal cabinet had approved the withdrawal of the curative review petition.

However, the Registrar of the Supreme Court had returned the instant petition after raising objections to it, saying that once the review petition is decided, it cannot be reviewed. The Prime Minister also said the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023 passed by the Parliament will institutionally strengthen the apex court. He said it will help make the process of bench formation and exercise of Article 184 (3) transparent and inclusive to serve the cause of justice.
