Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari on Friday announced that the government is implementing significant measures to enhance governance within the power sector.
During a media briefing in Islamabad, he highlighted the recent reduction in power tariffs announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as a key development in this initiative.
Leghari emphasized the government’s dedication to overhauling the power system through various strategies, including generating affordable electricity through public-private partnerships.
He revealed that domestic electricity consumers will benefit from a reduction of 7.41 rupees per unit, while industrial consumers will see a reduction of 7.69 rupees per unit. This initiative is expected to bring relief to the public and boost economic activities.
The Minister detailed successful negotiations with thirty-six Independent Power Producers, resulting in savings of 3,696 billion rupees, which will be passed on to consumers. Discussions with remaining IPPs are ongoing. He also mentioned efforts to shift imported coal power plants to Thar coal, aiming to reduce fuel costs and the import bill.
Leghari provided updates on the progress of solarizing 27,000 tube-wells in Balochistan and the ongoing privatization of power distribution companies. In the first phase, IESCO, FESCO, and GEPCO are set to undergo privatization.
