Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif met with German Ambassador Ina Lepel. The conversation stressed the province’s urgent need for international cooperation to tackle crises related to climate change.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted the severity of the disaster, stating that it was the region’s largest flood, caused by simultaneous high-level floods in three rivers and three months of continuous rainfall. She affirmed that timely evacuations, rescue, and relief operations are a testament to the Punjab government’s diligence.
The provincial administration successfully relocated 2.2 million livestock to safe places. Ms. Sharif detailed the comprehensive aid provided to affected citizens, which included shelters, food, dry rations, and extensive medical assistance through field hospitals, mobile clinics, and health counters in relief camps, which successfully prevented the spread of epidemics.
Ambassador Lepel, who recently visited the WASA Expo and deemed it commendable, acknowledged the severity of the floods in numerous rural areas and praised the provincial government’s “outstanding work” in handling the crisis.
Beyond immediate disaster response measures, the talks focused on broadening the long-standing partnership between Pakistan and Germany. The Chief Minister expressed her vision of a “prosperous and modern Punjab,” identifying Germany as a potential key ally in achieving this goal.
Opportunities to expand relations at the provincial level were a central theme, with Ms. Sharif welcoming further cooperation on Germany’s dual vocational training model and the exchange of skilled labor. Government-level talks scheduled for November are expected to further strengthen this partnership.
Economic ties between the two countries were also mentioned, with bilateral trade reaching $3.63 billion in 2024, with the trade balance in Pakistan’s favor. Currently, forty German companies are operating in the country, contributing to job creation.
Chief Minister Sharif reiterated that environmental protection is a top priority, and identified cross-border smog as another significant issue. The meeting also discussed enhancing educational ties, curriculum innovation, and the growing number of Pakistani students studying in Germany.
The scope of provincial public services was also discussed, with the Chief Minister mentioning the expansion of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) from four to 23 districts. She said that initiatives like WASA and the “Suthra Punjab” cleanliness program have tangibly improved the lives of residents.
Cultural and sports exchanges were also on the agenda, with the Chief Minister appreciating the services of the Annemarie-Schimmel-Haus in Lahore and welcoming German assistance in sports promotion. The recent visit of the German junior hockey team was termed a positive step, with hopes expressed for future coaching opportunities and athletic exchanges.
