ISLAMABAD:A District and Sessions court of the federal capital on Thursday discharged Lt Gen (r) Amjad Shoaib, a defence analyst, from a case registered against him here in the Ramna Police Station on February 25 for ‘inciting the public against national institutions, and consequently he was arrested by the police.
Additional Sessions Judge Tahir Abbas Supra discharged Amjad Shoaib from the case while announcing his verdict on a review petition filed by the lawyers of Amjad Shoaib against his three-day physical remand.
On Monday, Judicial Magistrate Abbas Shah had granted police a three-day physical remand of the retired senior army officer. The prosecutor had contended before the court that Amjad Shoaib, through his statement on TV, tried to spread hate between the government, the opposition and the government employees.
A case was registered against Amjad Shoaib under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups, etc.) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
The case was registered on the complaint of Islamabad’s Magistrate Owais Khan. The complainant had contended that Amjad Shoaib ‘incited’ people to revolt against institutions and attempted to provoke disharmony, and anarchy and create a law and order situation in the country through his controversial statements made on a TV show.
