Constitution should be implemented in letter and spirit: Justice Qazi Faez Isa

ISLAMABAD:Senior puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faez Isa has said that constitution should be implemented in letter and spirit because it guarantees people’s rights. He was addressing an event at a private university here in Islamabad on Wednesday held in connection with Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Constitution of Pakistan.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa- who is slated to become the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) in September this year- said constitution gives equal rights to all the citizens in Pakistan. He said we have to learn lessons from our history. He stressed the need to show unity to cope with the daunting challenges being faced by the nation today. He said the constitution gave the Supreme Court as a whole the right to take suo motu notice, adding that this power did not exclusively lie with the CJP. He said the meaning of the Supreme Court in Article 184(3) is that all judges and the chief justice unanimously (take suo motu notice).

Justice Qazi Faez Isa said that Article 184(3) of the Constitution sets out the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction, and enables it to assume jurisdiction in matters involving a question of “public importance” with reference to the “enforcement of any of the fundamental rights” of Pakistan’s citizens.
