LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi on Thursday signed a summary for dissolution of Punjab Assembly after successfully securing vote of confidence from Punjab Assembly amid opposition boycott.
The decision to dissolve the assembly was taken at a meeting between the chief minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan at Zaman Park. In his advise to the Punjab governor in the summary, CM Elahi wrote: “I Parvez Elahi, chief minister of Punjab, hereby advise you to dissolve the provincial assembly.”
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry confirmed to media that the Punjab CM had signed the summary in which he asked the governor to dissolve provincial assembly. The summary had also been sent to the Punjab governor, he maintained.
Lahore High Court (LHC) was told that Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman has withdrawn his order to de-notify Pervaiz Elahi as the chief minister of the province after he managed to secure the confidence of 186 members in the Punjab Assembly.
A five-member bench comprising Justice Abid Aziz Shaikh, Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal, Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh, Justice Asim Hafeez and Justice Muzamil Akhtar Shabir heard the case. During today’s proceedings, Elahi’s lawyer Barrister Ali Zafar informed the bench that his client had taken the vote of confidence from the Punjab Assembly.
It may be noted that CC Elahi won the vote of confidence from the Punjab Assembly in early hours of Thursday in a session by securing 186 votes amid the boycott by the opposition. Speaker Sibtain Khan said that Elahi had received 186 votes required to retain his position as CM Punjab.
