Chairman Senate Warns Against Blocking Pakistan’s Water Share

Islamabad:Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has issued a stern warning that any attempts to block, suspend, or divert Pakistan's legitimate share of water would be considered an act of war and would provoke a direct response.

According to Radio Pakistan, Gilani made these remarks during the inaugural ceremony of the Sixth Pakistan Water Week 2026 in Islamabad. He emphasized that Pakistan would not tolerate the weaponization of water or its use as a means of geopolitical pressure.

The Chairman Senate highlighted that the Indus Waters Treaty is a binding international agreement, and no party can unilaterally change, suspend, or revoke its provisions. He underlined the critical link between Pakistan's water security and its agricultural economy, food security, environmental sustainability, and overall economic development.

Yousaf Raza Gilani also called for increased investment in water conservation, efficient irrigation systems, modern water management technologies, research, and climate-resilient agricultural practices.
