In a significant move, the Federal Cabinet on Thursday decided to observe May 9 as the blackest day every year.

A special meeting of the federal cabinet was held in Islamabad, in which a condemnation resolution regarding the May 9 mayhem was adopted. The meeting recommended stringent measures against attacks and vandalism on military and national installations. The recommendations will be presented in the parliament for legislation.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented a report of the cabinet committee formed in the tenure of the interim government to investigate the May 9 riots. The cabinet committee had recommended amendments to laws and stringent penalties for the destruction of government installations.

Moreover, the cabinet members unanimously demanded swift and logical conclusions to cases involving elements involved in the incident. Tarar expressed hope that decisions like those made regarding the Gujranwala incident would be made in other places as well.

He wished for timely decisions to send a message to the public that anyone who challenges the law faces justice and consequences promptly. Meanwhile, Political Affairs Advisor Rana Sanaullah termed the cabinet’s report unsatisfactory and traditional, lacking clear identification of those involved.

It was decided in the session that the recommendations of the interim cabinet committee would be discussed in parliament for legislation.
