British-Pakistan Health Collaboration Aims to Strengthen Pandemic Preparedness

The British High Commissioner, Ms. Jane Marriott, engaged with Federal Health Minister Mr. Mustafa Kamal in Islamabad to explore ongoing and future healthcare collaborations between Pakistan and the UK. The meeting focused on reinforcing health security for future pandemics. High Commissioner Marriott applauded Minister Kamal’s leadership and expressed confidence in his ability to drive significant improvements in the healthcare sector.

Minister Kamal acknowledged the UK’s support in health initiatives and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing these programs. He highlighted the government’s focus on improving healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas, under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership.

Minister Kamal shared his vision for utilizing digital health technology to broaden access, emphasizing telemedicine and electronic medical records. He also announced a nationwide Hepatitis C elimination program, following a successful pilot in Gilgit-Baltistan, and stressed the importance of addressing the 11 million cases in the country through screening and testing.

Efforts to develop the nursing sector were also discussed. Minister Kamal detailed initiatives to align nursing education with international standards to address the local shortage and meet global demand. He highlighted the potential for Pakistani nurses to work internationally, contributing to foreign exchange.

High Commissioner Marriott endorsed Minister Kamal’s vision and assured continued UK support, praising the proactive approach of the Pakistani government under Prime Minister Sharif’s leadership. The meeting underscored a shared commitment to advancing healthcare services in Pakistan.
