Anti-polio campaign to vaccinate 10.3m children in Sindh from tomorrow

KARACHI:,,, Continuing our commitment to safeguard the health of our children, the Department of Health, Government of Sindh, has announced the launch of the National Immunization Days (NIDs) campaign from January 8th to 14th, 2024.

According to a statement on Sunday, this crucial initiative aims to vaccinate approximately 10.3 million children under the age of 5 against the poliovirus across all 30 districts of Sindh. This is the first campaign of the new year, and it is our resolve to eradicate the deadly disease from the province this year, where it had recently emerged again after a long time last year.

Almost 37000 dedicated vaccination teams will be working throughout the province, ensuring that every eligible child receives this life-saving vaccine. This monumental effort will be supported by 4,225 security personnel. We request all schools, hospitals and caregivers to welcome vaccinators, as they truly are fighting on the frontline in the last stages of our battle against this debilitating disease.

Dr. Saad Niaz, Caretaker Minister for Health, Sindh, stated, “The success of this campaign hinges on community cooperation and awareness. We implore parents to bring their children forward for vaccination, safeguarding them from the debilitating effects of polio.”

In recent reports, 11 out of the 28 sites where environmental samples are collected from in Sindh have produced positive results for wild poliovirus, with two children infected from UC Gujro, Karachi District East. This situation underscores the urgency of this vaccination drive. It is worth mentioning here that the genetic links of this virus were originally traced back to Afghanistan.

To ensure no child is left unprotected, we encourage parents whose children were missed in prior campaigns to contact us through the Emergency Operations Centre’s Sehat Tahhafuz Helpline 1166 or via our 24/7 WhatsApp Helpline 0346-777-65-46. Alternatively, they can visit the nearest health facility for immediate assistance.

The media plays a pivotal role in disseminating critical information. We urge journalists and community leaders to rally support for this campaign, echoing the endorsement of medical experts and religious scholars who advocate for the safety and efficacy of the oral polio vaccine. Together, as a community, let us forge a path towards a polio-free environment, securing a healthier future for our children.
