Islamabad: Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have expressed their firm commitment to ensuring the safety of journalists and upholding freedom of press and expression in Pakistan. In their statements on the occasion of International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, they emphasized the importance of a free press as a cornerstone for democratic stability and transparency in the country.

According to Radio Pakistan, Acting President Gillani highlighted that the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees the right to freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and access to information. He noted that the government has taken significant steps to protect journalists and media workers, including the enactment of the Journalists and Media Workers Protection Act 2021 and the introduction of health insurance for journalists. He stressed the need for an integrated strategy and comprehensive system to further safeguard journalists.

Addressing the situation
in Palestine, Acting President Gillani condemned the targeting of journalists in conflict zones, citing the United Nations’ reports of over 130 journalists killed in Gaza due to Israeli military actions. He called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for these acts.

Prime Minister Sharif, in his message, underscored that the protection of journalists is essential for maintaining press freedom. He acknowledged the challenges journalists face globally, including violence, threats, and other dangers, particularly in conflict areas. He lamented the deliberate targeting of journalists in Gaza, despite international conventions.

Prime Minister Sharif praised the sacrifices made by Pakistani journalists for democracy and the rule of law. He affirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing journalists’ rights and safety, ensuring that perpetrators of crimes against journalists are brought to justice.
