Pakistan mounts a national response to devastating floods that have claimed 670 lives and injured 1,000, according to officials. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, flanked by Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik and NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider, briefed the media in Islamabad today following a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister to assess the flood situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The meeting examined the ongoing relief and rescue attempts and stressed effective collaboration with provincial administrations. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has been consistently supplying data to pertinent authorities through its early warning system and remains in close communication with provincial governments, per the Prime Minister”s directive.

Relief measures are underway in impacted regions, with Minister Malik pledging comprehensive compensation for flood victims. He urged provincial authorities to initiate campaigns for the permanent relocation of communities residing near rivers and streams in mountainous areas to secure locations.

The NDMA Chairman confirmed continuous coordination with provincial governments to ensure prompt support and efficient response in the flood-stricken zones. Over 420 relief camps have been established in these areas.

Two to three additional monsoon periods are anticipated, with the current spell persisting until Friday. Conditions are predicted to stabilize by September”s end. The government’s immediate focus is rescuing and relocating individuals to safety. Damage assessments will commence after the monsoon season concludes, according to Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik.
