LAHORE: The federal government on the recommendation of the Punjab government on Saturday deployed Rangers in Lahore and Rawalpindi fearing a law and order situation in these two districts following eruption of the controversy over the election of Punjab Chief Minister.

The police force has requested the Punjab Home Department for deployment of the paramilitary force. Consequently, the Home Department wrote a letter to the federal government for Rangers deployment.

As many as 4,000 Ranges troops have now been deployed in Lahore and Rawalpindi. According to Punjab government, the Rangers were deployed because it was feared that the law and order situation could deteriorate in these two cities.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers protested across the country late Friday night against the ruling of the Punjab Assembly’s deputy speaker who rejected 10 votes of PML-Q in the election of CM Punjab, leading Hamza Shehbaz of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate to retain his chief ministership of the province. Chairman PTI Imran Khan has given the protest call in his late-night speech. The PTI chief said he was in a state of shock to see the incidents in the Punjab Assembly during the run-off election.
