Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah marked the International Day of Forests by underlining the critical role of forests in ensuring food security and stabilizing the environment.
He drew attention to this year’s theme, ‘Forests and Food: The Future of Food Starts in Forests,’ emphasizing that forests form an essential part of the ecosystem and their protection is a shared responsibility.
Highlighting the global significance of forests, the Chief Minister noted that they support food security, provide nutrition, and are a source of livelihood for millions of families.
In times of crisis, forests function as a key resource for food and income. He observed that the growth of trees contributes to reducing mental stress and has a positive impact on physical health.
Forests play a role in controlling air pollution and improving urban climate. Trees serve as an effective source of oxygen and are vital for environmental balance.
He pointed out that deforestation contributes to climate change and disrupts ecological systems. Forests provide habitat for countless species, including animals, birds, and insects, helping to sustain natural balance.
The Chief Minister noted that forests help reduce flood intensity and prevent soil erosion. He stated that the Sindh government has implemented several measures for forest conservation and growth.
Under these efforts, 160,000 hectares of mangrove forests have been restored in the Indus Delta. Additionally, a public-private partnership model is being introduced for riverine forests.
These steps aim to ensure environmental protection while supporting the local economy.
