Afridi resigns to lead Tarin’s election to Senate seat

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ayub Afridi has resigned from the post of Senator and submitted his resignation to Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, PPI learnt here on Tuesday.

The Chairman Senate has accepted Afridi’s resignation to pay a way for the election of Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin to the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on a general seat. In a statement, Afridi said he resigned happily as per wish of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The Prime Minister on Monday appointed Afridi as his Advisor on Overseas Pakistanis. President Dr Arif Alvi formally approved the appointment of Afridi as an advisor on the recommendation of the PM. Afridi was a member of the Senate from PTI since March 2018 from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

On Oct 18, the government had appointed Shaukat Tarin as the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance. Tarin’s six-month tenure as the Minister of Finance expired on October 16. Under the country’s constitution, a non-elected person can be appointed as a federal minister for a six-month period, during which he or she is bound to be elected to Parliament to continue the term. Since Tarin could not get elected to Parliament, he was made the PM’s adviser on finance and revenue to continue leading the incumbent government’s economic team.
